Is Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) missing the boat on this one?
According to a release issued earlier, Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) is getting into the "novel" cloud game via the launch of its NOOK for Web service. Barnes & Noble says NOOK for Web, "offers readers the ability to explore the hottest digital titles and bestselling books right from their computer – no sign-in, software download or NOOK account required to begin reading."
The service is available on PC or Mac, not Apple's iPad or any other Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android device.
With Google also introducing its Kindle Cloud Reader last year, some might be wondering where Apple is in all this? Currently, you have to download and store a book on your iPad through the cleverly-titled app, iBooks. (Note: Kindle Cloud Reader also worked on the iPad...because, Amazon).
In addition to Google and Barnes & Noble, Kobo also launched its Kobo Instant Reader recently, which also runs on the iPad.
Is Apple missing a big, cash-spewing segment here? Given there's no physical form of the books -- save for the memory drives holding them in some obscure location -- it must be a profitable venture.
Shares of Apple are up 0.4 percent. while Barnes & Noble is 1.4 percent better on the session.
