Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) remained in the top three position for worldwide server shipments for the fourth quarter of 2011, but had an interesting metric attached.
According to new data from research firm Gartner, Dell shipped 573,125 servers last quarter, up 11.2 percent, improving its market position from 21.5 percent the prior year to 22.9 percent in the recent quarter. Dell was basically the only one in the top four improving its position.
First place Hewlett-Packard slung 704,853 units, down 8.1 percent, with its market share slipping from 32.0 percent to 28.1 percent.
International Business Machines (NYSE: IBM) shipped just about the same amount of servers at 329,323, though its share fell 0.8 points to 13.1 percent.
Making big gains was fifth-place Lenovo, which reported a 51 percent increase in shipments to 49,084 units.
On Tuesday's session, Dell and IBM are in positive territory, while Hewlett-Packard is lower.
