Dell (DELL) Creates Surface Pro-Killer with Gigantic Tablet/PC Offering (MSFT)

March 13, 2013 9:28 AM EDT
Is Dell, Inc. (Nasdaq: DELL) looking to bogart Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) in the world of Windows 8-equipped tablets?

News out today covers a new offering from Dell. The company is releasing something called the XPS 18. Looking at the device, it appears to be an all-in-one PC with touchscreen capability.

Then you pick it up off the stand and realized that it's a giant tablet. The XPS 18 is equipped with an Intel Pentium processor and about 320-gigabytes of memory. More than anything else, the screen size ins 18.4-inches and the device weighs in at a svelte five pounds. By comparison, an offering from Sony (NYSE: SNE) tips the scales at over 11 pounds.

The nail in the coffin might be pricing. According to TheVerge, Dell's giant tablet/PC should start at $899, which is in-line with Microsoft's low-end Surface Pro offering. It should be noted that Microsoft's tablet comes with about 64-GB of memory, but the cost of software and accessories (like the Surface Touch Cover at $119.99) quickly increase the price.

Dell's offering also includes two USB 3.0 jacks, a 3.5mm headset socket, 720p webcam, SD slot, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. Battery life is expected to be about 5 hours, which is short for a tablet, but long for a TV-sized tablet.

The device debuted at SXSW this year.

Into the open, Microsoft is indicated lower.
