Critics Can’t Wait to Slam Microsoft (MSFT) Tablet on Monday

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) is rolling out the red carpet for a media event in Los Angeles on Monday, where the company is expected to announce a new tablet.

So far Microsoft is keeping quiet on the details, and there is a lot of speculation going into the weekend. Investors are concerned Microsoft’s new tablet will not be able to compete with Apple’s iPad. Microsoft is a software company at heart, after all, and the company may not have the chops to deliver on the manufacturing end.

At the very least, a Microsoft tablet will be a good platform to show off its new Windows 8 software. But other tablet manufacturers are slated to run Windows 8, and this has many wondering about potential conflicts.

Writers at PCMag called the move “dumb,” and said Microsoft should ditch the idea and focus on licensing. Others aren’t as pessimistic -- but that could change on Monday when members of the press get a look at the new device. For now, most industry insiders seem reluctant to get their hopes up, although there does seem to be a bit of optimism below a surface glistening with cynicism. It will likely remain hidden there until Monday, buried under a pile of old Zune reviews!
