Could Apple's (AAPL) Devices Soon Be Powered by AMD (AMD) Chips?

According to a report from Appleinsider, Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) may soon lose its role as the sole provider of microprocessors for Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) notebooks and desktops, as talks have been ongoing with Intel’s biggest rival.
The report said that representatives of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) have recently been seen on their way out of meetings with top executives at Apple, according to unnamed sources.
The meetings have reportedly included AMD giving permission to Apple to begin working with its processors in the development of future products. The CPUs that are reportedly being worked with by Apple from AMD include those of the chipmaker’s workstation and notebook.
The move to AMD products could be a result of issues that Apple has experienced with CPUs from Intel, such as the limited availability of new processors and Intel attempting to block Apple’s partnership with NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA) to offer a standardized chipset for all of it consumer computers.
When Apple choose to go with Intel CPUs in 2005, it is clear that the company had information about the future line of Core processors on the horizon. Perhaps Apple again has received some glimpse of the future as to what AMD has in the pipeline.
