Consumer Sentiment in August Hits Lowest Level Since April of '09
Consumers were less confident in August than any other month over the last two years as economic conditions, unemployment, and inflation weigh.
According to data from the Conference Board Tuesday, an index of consumer confidence fell to 44.5 in August, it's weakest point since April of 2009. The number was a 25 percent plunge from 59.2 in July.
Median forecasts had the metric falling to just 52 in August.
According to the report, a measure of present conditions declined from 35.7 in July to 33.3, the second lowest this year. The measure of expectations for the next six months slid from 74.9 to 51.9, the weakest since April 2009.
Fewer respondents in the survey expected more jobs to be available over the next six months, or that they were planning to buy a house.
