Toyota Motor (NYSE: TM) trading surprisingly higher amid a new report from Consumer Reports that its Prius C...well, it may not be as good as consumers think.
According to the brief report, the Prius C (which is not the SuperSport tag for a Prius, despite initial indications suggesting otherwise) scored low on all of CRs criteria for rating a car. Basically, they said if you want a $20,000 Prius, then buy a used one.
In addition, compared with other autos in the new-car market, CR finds the Prius C more disappointing. CR points to the Hyundai Accent and/or GM's (NYSE: GM) Chevy Sonic instead of the Prius C, saying they both drive like a Mercedes in comparison.
From the report: "It's not just griping over cheap plastics either. The Prius C doesn't do well in many of our tests. Acceleration is slow. The cramped driving position is flawed. The ride is always busy, and the cabin is loud. Plus it reminds us that not all cars have nimble handling."
CR still call the Prius liftback and Prius V good buys. Toyota shares are up about 0.4 percent on the session Thursday.
