Confidence Remains at Two-Year Lows as Job Prospects Dim
Difficulty getting a job in the current tough economy has driven consumer confidence down to nearly a two-year low.
The Conference Board Tuesday said it's sentiment index increased just 0.2 points from a revised 45.2 in August to 45.4 in September. The August reading was the lowest the index had been since April 2009.
Economists were looking for the number to edge up to 46 in September.
With job creation lacking in August, it's no wonder confidence is near record lows. Unemployment remained flat at 9.1 percent in August, with the next report scheduled for October 7th.
Confidence fell in 6 of 9 regions, data shows, with the percent of respondents expecting the jobs environment to improve over the next six months lumbereing higher from 11.8 percent to 12.0 percent.
