Competition Appears Biggest Reason for BlackBerry's (BBRY) Troubles

August 12, 2013 12:17 PM EDT
BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) said it would be looking at strategic alternatives for the company to enhance shareholder value. The following question was posed on Yahoo! Finance today:

Blackberry is exploring a sale or joint venture. When buying your next phone, would you consider getting a Blackberry?

The following were the answer choices, with vote count through noon Monday:
  • 'I have one now, or I'd consider it' - 3446 votes, or 14 percent

  • 'No, I buy Apple' - 6487 votes, or 26 percent

  • 'There are a lot of other good choices' - 14865 votes, or 60 percent
There you have it. While not entirely surprising, stronger competition has forced weaker competitors out of the mobile market. BlackBerry's late debut of BB10 might have had something to do with it, though improvements from other operating systems are just as responsible.
