Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) is getting some serious backlash Monday for its Super Bowl ad "It's Beautiful," which shows "America the Beautiful" being sung in seven different languages.
Many are calling the ad "disrespectful."
Coca-Cola plans to debut a 90-second version of the spot during the opening ceremony of the 2014 winter games. However, if some get their way the ad will be pulled altogether.
Here are some comments at StreetInsider.com:
Coke ad: - By: Minnesota patriot
"Seriously? You desecrate the foundation of America by advertising the singing our "second" national anthem in other languages? That's a disgrace. We celebrate diversity, and we celebrate and embrace the fact that that our nation is founded by immigrants, but we should ALL sing America The Beautiful in English - the language of our country."
Ad is Offensive - By: Nancy Bennett
"I have always loved Coke's ads on all around the world sharing a Coke. But, to sing "America the Beautiful" in any language but English is disrespectful to a sacred American hymn. We are loyal Diet Coke drinkers and will seriously consider breaking the habit."
bad idea - By: tx 4ever
"Very poor taste and disrespectful. America the Beautiful in all those languages? How about suggesting that the immigrants who come to the US learn English instead of encouraging them not to by this awful commercial."
Well Intended - Gone Too Far - By: Diverse Citizan
"What other country in the world would subordinate the language of the land while singing America the Beautiful? Yes, we're a country of immigrants - we came here for a better life and learned the language of the land. What's happened to that?"
worst ad ever - By: English only
"This was the worst, most offensive ad ever. English is the glue that binds us together and this ad spit in the face of everyone who supports borders, language and culture. Drink Pepsi!"
