Clock's Ticking for Google (GOOG) Following Missed Nortel Bid

July 1, 2011 10:08 AM EDT
Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) new CEO Larry Page will be going into the weekend happy.

Following reports today that the Mountain View, CA-based search giant won a bidding war for Nortel Networks porfolio of 6,000 patents, Page will surely...what's that?

Google didn't win? Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) got the patents? Well, that's not good news for Page.

In arguably the first big miss for Page, Google failed to capitalize on the opportunity for a mountain of intellectual property. Now, the search giant will be targeted even further as rivals gain the rights to thousands of key technology innovations.

And don't think for one second that they won't seek litigation for infringement.

The ever targeted Google may want to revamp its litigation team, or set up a new, dedicated facility on its campus for lawyers and experts, because things could get really messy from here on out.

But, there's still time for Google. Both U.S. and Canadian regulators will be taking a look at the bids, paperwork, patents, and everything else...a process that could last months.

Nortel said that it's hoping to close the deal in third-quarter of 2011. You've been warned, Larry, and now's the time for redemption.
