China Southern Flight Attendant Electrocuted While Using Apple (AAPL) iPhone 5

July 15, 2013 8:28 AM EDT
Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is lower early Monday following headlines that its iPhone might have led to the death of at least one in China.

Xinhua reported over the weekend that a flight attendant with China Southern Airlines may have been electrocuted by her iPhone 5. Sources said the attendant was picking up her iPhone 5 to answer it while it was being charged at the time of the incident.

Apple issued a statement saying that the company planned to "thoroughly investigate" the incident to get to the root of the cause.

Officials in China haven't directly tied the iPhone 5 to the death, yet.

Mobile phones generally have an output of 3 to 5 volts, while the human body doesn't feel a shock until 36 volts. Should a faulty wire be involved with the charger, than a shock of 220 volts might be possible. The charger in question was said to be an original model, not one made by a third-party supplier.

Shares of Apple are down about 0.3 percent.
