The National Transportation Safety Board has requested a nationwide ban on using a cell phone or text messaging device will driving.
If the law is adopted by states, people would not be allowed to make a phone call or send out a text with their mobile device while driving. The ban does not include passengers in the vehicle or hands free devices.
If the law is passed and adopted by all states, this may benefit sales for Ford (NYSE: F) as its Sync system, developed by Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), allows the driver to make phone calls or send text messages without directly touching their mobile device. Another company, Nuance Communications (Nasdaq: NUAN), provides the speech-recognition technology in the Sync, system.
A new law of this stature could also prompt car producers to possibly partner with Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) in an effort to stall Appleās Siri system into the car. The Siri system also uses Nuance for its underlying technology.
