Can't Buy Groupon? Just Try to Beat Them (GOOG)

January 21, 2011 3:07 PM EST
According to a report on Mashable, the Mountain View, CA-based Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is aiming to go fist-to-fist with Groupon (and
LivingSocial) in offering special deals to subscribers (e.g. - users).

After offering $6 billion for the company, and getting denied, Google is now about to start their own deal-producing social hub dubbed "Google Offers."

Just like most group offers, there is a certain timeframe where people can elect to get a certain deal of the day, and the deal goes through if a select number of users participates. Otherwise, all you're left with is hope.

Mashable believes that the whole operation will be powered by Google Checkout, with sharing options including Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, and Google Buzz.

Google has since responded to inquires about Offers:

“Google is communicating with small businesses to enlist their support and participation in a test of a pre-paid offers/vouchers program. This initiative is part of an ongoing effort at Google to make new products, such as the recent Offer Ads beta, that connect businesses with customers in new ways. We do not have more details to share at this time, but will keep you posted.”
