California Looks to Become Gigafactory-Friendly State (TSLA)

June 5, 2014 5:25 PM EDT

It would seem California is vying to have Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) start one of its Gigafactories there.

Bloomberg reported late in the session that California lawmakers are pushing legislation which would put the state in a more-favorable light by accelerating the project.

Sponsoring the bill are Senate President Pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg, a Sacramento Democrat, and Senator Ted Gaines, a Republican from Roseville.

The unspecified changes would be for regulatory and environmental processes to expedite groundbreaking.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously criticized California's need for a stringent environmental review as a reason the state wasn't initially considered, though it was added back on last May.

Shares of Tesla are up 0.1 percent late Thursday.
