Remember when Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) launched its latest iPhone handsets? Of course you do, because the event was highly anticipated. (You'll always remember where you were on September 10, 2013.)
What if we told you that BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) just debuted its latest flagship device today? It's true, they did.
With a somewhat "under the radar" press release, BlackBerry introduced the successor to the Z10 handset: the Z30.
BlackBerry calls it the biggest, fastest and most advanced smartphone the company has ever created. Key features include a 5-inch Super AMOLED display, 1.7-gigahertz quad core processor, stereo speakers, and 2,800-mAh battery for extended battery life.
The problem is this: the device runs BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.2. BlackBerry's next device could run on nothing but the air we breathe, have raised-button technology on its display panel, add 10 points to your IQ, and make you an overall more-attractive human being, but not many people will buy it because now the company has a stigma of potentially being sold and there's really no robust ecosystem for BB10.
Will the company keep supporting the device following a sale?
How can I channel streaming content to my TV or watch it on my device later on?
Not that BlackBerry should just sit and do nothing until a transaction is made. The company still has to maintain its value to entice bidders to pay more. However, we're guessing that not many investors are looking at BlackBerry as a handset company versus one that has a robust patent portfolio or one that has a strong following to its BlackBerry Messenger segment.
Maybe a quiet introduction was best this time around.
Shares of BlackBerry are indicated higher Wednesday morning.
