BlackBerry (BBRY) Distances Itself From Fake BBM Reviews on Google Play

BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) recently announced the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) for Android and iOS was downloaded over 10 million views. That means users are enthusiastic about it, right?

To the untrained (or oblivious) eye, reviews on Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Play might seem largely positive. But, TheNextWeb (TNW) was forwarded some information that many of the reviews seem...similar.

In fact, many were cut-and-pasted into the system. This raised some red flags for pundits of BlackBerry, saying that the company was submitting artificial reviews.

BlackBerry has insisted that it has nothing to do with the submissions. One spokesperson for the company told TNW:

We have been made aware of a number of potentially fake reviews of BBM for Android on Google Play, with ratings anywhere from one to five stars. We have no knowledge of how these reviews were created or populated. We do not approve of or condone such activities. There are also many genuinely great and useful reviews from our new BBM users on Google Play. We would like to encourage our fans and users to continue to provide true assessments of the BBM experience through the proper channels.

Really, if you look at the reviews, BlackBerry isn't likely to think something like that would pass muster even if it did want to bolster its standing on Google Play. Shares of the company are up about 0.4 percent.
