BlackBerry (BBRY) CEO Chen: Our Turnaround has 50% Chance of Success

March 5, 2014 11:47 AM EST
BlackBerry (Nasdaq: BBRY) has been hampered and even (slightly) ridiculed by its own carriers as of recent. So, what does the head executive of the company looking to revamp itself have to say?

There's about a 50:50 chance BlackBerry's turnaround efforts will succeed.

The Financial Times (FT) reported Tuesday, citing commentary from 2014 CES in Las Vegas, the BlackBerry CEO John Chen is only half-convinced that his strategy to re-energize the beleaguered smartphone company would result in success. But, he remains optimistic.

It is all about execution now ... [we need to refocus on] our heritage and roots – delivering enterprise-grade, end-to-end mobile solutions.

While Chen has moved to revamp BlackBerry's management team, another key detail of his strategy includes the execution of a manufacturing contract with Foxconn. That partnership produced the low-cost Z3 handset, a device aimed at consumers in emerging markets. The Z3 will go on sale in Indonesia next month with a starting price under $200.

Other business areas Chen is looking to expand include its enterprise mobile and server business, its embedded systems unit, and, of course, the popular BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) unit.

Shares of BlackBerry are down 2 percent Wednesday.
