Bernanke Named Person of the Year
Time Magazine has named Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke the 2009 "Person of the Year."
Bernanke was said to be the most important player that is guiding the world's most important economy out of the recession.
Time described Bernanke as a bald man who is soft spoken and nerd, but the most powerful nerd on the planet.
Bernanke is at the head of the central bank of the U.S., which controls the nation’s money supply. His efforts to infuse liquidity into the economy and keep interest rates at historically low levels has counteracted the potential for issues arising from inflation, unemployment and the dollar strength.
"I understand why people are frustrated. I'm frustrated too," Bernanke says. "I'm not one of those people who look at this as some kind of video game. I come from Main Street, from a small town that's really depressed. This is all very real to me.”
Time justified the reason for selecting Bernanke as the "Person of the Year" by acknowledging that the financial market, which was the biggest story in the news over the last 12-months, is bad, real bad. Without Bernanke the magazine believes that the situation could be much worse.
Bernanke takes the title from 2008 "Person of the Year," at the time president-elect, Barack Obama.
Runners-up for the title were General Stanley McChrystal, The Chinese Worker, Nancy Pelosi and
Usain Bolt.
