Battery-Equipped Cover Could Debut With Next Microsoft (MSFT) Surface Tablet Line

Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) next-generation Surface might not be a jaw-dropping upgrade from the current model, but there is one key feature that might be clutch when trying to sell more of the device.

Neowin reported today that the next version of Microsoft's Surface tablet -- dubbed the Surface 2 by tech blogs -- may offer a "Power Cover" with a battery inside that should extend the usability of the device for all-day computing.

Speculation right now doesn't have timing on when the "Power Cover" will be released, meaning it could come with the Surface 2 or at a later date. The device should work with the Surface Pro, Surface 2, and Surface Pro 2, but not Surface RT.

Wieght of the new cover should be about 1.1-pounds, from 250-grams for the current Type Cover. Thickness will be about 0.38-inches, up from 0.21-inches on the Type Cover.

The Surface Pro 2 will run Intel's (Nasdaq: INTC) new Haswell processor while the Surface 2 will run on NVIDIA's (Nasdaq: NVDA) Tegra 4 chipset. Both of the new devices are expected to start shipping in mid-to-late October.

Shares of Microsoft are postiive on the session.
