According to a release on the BP Plc (NYSE: BP) website today, the cost of the Gulf oil spill response has reached $2.35 billion. The company also stated that 74,000 claims have been filed, and 39,000 payments have been made, to the tune of $126 million, equating to about $3,900 per claim.
They note that 37,000 personnel, 4,500 vessels, and 100 aircraft are engaged in the surface response effort. They have collected 25.6 million barrels of oil from the surface, and have completed 275 controlled burns.
Total oil recovered or flared from the two deepwater containment systems is 365,500 barrels.
Regarding the relief well started on May 2, 2010, BP says that they have reached a depth of 16,275 feet and detected the MC252 well. The target well depth is approximately 18,000 feet below the surface. There is a second relief well, at 10,500 feet, that commenced on May 16, 2010. Both of the wells are expected to take three months from onset to complete.
The news comes amid recent hang-ups including the transfer of leadership for the operation from Tony Hayward to Bob Dudley and a halting of oil collection due to a collision from a submersible robot.
