Audi Plans to Launch 'eSUV' in 2018 (TSLA)

August 19, 2015 7:15 AM EDT

Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) is set to release its Model X SUV sometime next month (at least, the company will aim to get a few into the hands of consumers as it continues talks with parts suppliers). However, by 2018, competition in the eSUV segment will be just a little more fierce.

Audi released the following press release earlier Wednesday. The vehicle highlighted in an all-electric SUV, which the company says will get over 310 miles on a single charge and have a coefficient of drag value of 0.25.

While the challenge is more than likely welcome by Tesla, which may move to make several modifications to the Model X by the time 2018 rolls around, its still another reminder that fierce competition is waiting in the wings.

Shares of Tesla are indicated for a higher open Wednesday.

Electric driving at Audi is a pleasure, not a compromise. The brand is demonstrating this with the Audi e-tron quattro concept at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2015 in Frankfurt. The sporty SUV provides an outlook on the brand’s first large-series electric car.

  • The latest battery technology and top aerodynamics ensure a range of more than 500 kilometers (310 miles)
  • Sporty SUV with all-electric drive in series production from 2018
