Apple's (AAPL) Next Tablet May Not Be Named 'iPad 3'

One great rule of thumb for business and life is: keep it simple. Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is great at this and reports Tuesday suggest the media and tech giant is not looking to break that streak anytime soon.

According to CNET and AppleInsider, the next-generation tablet device from Apple could bear the name of "iPad HD." The name would reflect one of the better upgrades for the tablet, namely the high-resolution "retina display."

Supporting the rumor would be images on tech blog Gizmodo showing products for the new tablet by Griffin and Belkin with the "iPad HD" name on them.

Referring to the next iPad as the HD or anything besides "3" would follow with the likes of the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4S, where upgrades weren't significant enough to warrant a full number change. This also means the new iPad will likely ship with an enhanced A5 chip rather than a brand new A6 chip that some speculators were anticipating.

While the move would give a little freshness to Apple's tablet line, not calling the device "iPad 3" could give investors the same sinking feeling as last September-October when the next iPhone wasn't the iPhone 5.

The world will find out Wednesday March 7th at around 10AM PT...
