Apple Could Have a New iPad for the Holidays

September 14, 2010 2:35 PM EDT
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) may be planning a next generation of its iPad tablet computer to be ready for the holiday shopping season, according to a report from AppleInsider.

The move would be atypical for the company which usually employs a 12-month product cycle for its devices. The newest iPad would employ cameras for the FaceTime application that allows video conferencing.

"That person familiar with the company's plans claims that as of last month, there was an ambitious push inside Apple to verify the refresh for a possible launch ahead of this year's holiday shopping season,” the AppleInsider report said.

The sources familiar with the matter cited by AppleInsider said that the device is in the advanced testing stages. The report said that the new version would be ready for introduction no later than the first quarter of next year. The first generation of the iPad was released in the spring to overwhelming success.

The move would keep Apple from slashing the price of its tablet computer. The company has employed a strategy in the past of renewing its top-selling products to keep price points and margins intact.

The recent claims that Apple has been looking to ramp up production of its iPad to 3 million units per month could have been misunderstood. The company may be increasing production in order to bring this new version out sooner that may have been expected.

The rumor may simply be that, a rumor. But Apple may be looking to completely shut the door on those who seek to get in on the tablet market while it is still fresh.

Shares of Apple are up $1.44 to $268.48 in midday market movement on Tuesday.
