Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook Comments Suggest iTV is Real

May 30, 2012 9:03 AM EDT
Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) CEO Tim Cook gave speculators what they wanted at last night's D10 conference... comments suggesting rumors of a full-fledged TV is real.

Cook said the company has "intense focus" on the Apple TV, the current set-top box on the market although he stopped short of admitting to a full-fledged TV set. "You were right. I'm not going to tell you," Cook responded to a direct question about an Apple television set from Walt Mossberg.

Commenting on Apple's focus on the TV business, Cook said, "We're not a hobby kind of company, as you know."

Cook said the company sold 2.8 million Apple TV devices last year, and nearly that amount in the first few months of this year. "This is an area of intense interest for us," Cook said. "We are going to keep pulling the string and see where this takes us."

Asked if a TV can be improved with just a box, and then leaving the panel to others, Cook said, "We would look not just at this area, but other areas, and ask, can we control the key technology? Can we make a significant contribution far beyond what others have done in this area? Can we make a product that we all want? … Those are all the things we would ask about any new product category."

Shares of Apple last traded at $569.25, down 0.5 percent.
