Apple (AAPL) to Opt Out of iPhone Tracking...Mostly

December 1, 2011 4:24 PM EST
Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is following the footsteps of Facebook.

According to a release from the company, it will stop supporting CarrierIQ with it's iOS5 platform in "most" of it's products.

The statement from the company is as follows: "We stopped supporting CarrierIQ with iOS 5 in most of our products and will remove it completely in a future software update. With any diagnostic data sent to Apple, customers must actively opt-in to share this information, and if they do, the data is sent in an anonymous and encrypted form and does not include any personal information. We never recorded keystrokes, messages or any other personal information for diagnostic data and have no plans to ever do so."

The move comes after Facebook settled privacy charges with the FTC on Tuesday. Though directly unrelated, and no cash traded hands, Apple received complaints and some scrutiny for the way it handed phone tracking in the past.
