Looks like March or April 2012 is going to be a magical time of year for some tech fans. That's when Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) next-generation iPad is expected to hit shelves.
According to Digitimes, contacts in Apple's supply chain have suggested that the new iPad will be available in 3 to 4 months. The suppliers have begun shipping parts and components to OEMs in preparation of the launch.
Conversely, production of iPad 2 components will start winding down, from 14 to 15 million units expected in the fourth-quarter, to just 4 to 5 million units in the following quarter.
Digitimes also cites China's Commercial Times in saying that long-time Apple supplier, Foxconn, will begin production of the next iPad in January, and ramp that up in February in preparation of the launch. IPad 3 production should reach 9.5 to 9.8 million units in the first-quarter of 2012, already meeting the pace of 40 million units estimated to be sold of the iPad/iPad 2 in 2011.
Previous versions of the iPad have also launched in the spring, starting with the original device in April 2010.
Apple shares are slightly lower early Monday.
