Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is reportedly exploring the use of carbon fiber to create housing for its line of mobile devices, including the iPad.
The report comes from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which published a new application this week from Apple which describes an outer shell for electronic devices that is composed of a "layered fiber-in-matrix type material, such as CFRP," also known as carbon fiber-reinforced polymer.
The use of carbon fiber has the advantage of making devices lighter, and in the case of the iPad, it would lighten the device by substituting the current aluminum outer shell for a lighter version.
However, devices made of carbon fiber can often crack when bent or rolled the wrong way, a problem Apple appears to think it has a solution to with its design that allows for the fibers to run in different directions.
