Apple (AAPL) iPhone 5S Could See Large Boost in Performance

Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) upcoming iPhone 5S should not only include an upgraded operating system in iOS 7, but a noticeably faster processor, as well.

According to reports out over the weekend, Apple might include an A7 processor in the iPhone 5S -- known tentatively as the successor to the current iPhone 5 -- which would be 31 percent quicker than what is currently in the iPhone 5. One KGI Securities analyst recently said that Apple switching to ARMv8 architecture might boost efficiency by 20 percent, while a move to 64-bit support could also boost speeds as the chip would be able to handle more graphical tasks like animations and transparencies.

Aside from the iPhone 5S, the next version (or maybe the one after next) might also see a chip upgrade. The current version of the iPad uses a modified iPhone 5 chip named the A6X.

Apple is indicated higher early Monday.
