Apple (AAPL) iPhone 5 Could See Panel Supply Issues Amid 'Defect'

September 23, 2011 7:56 AM EDT
Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone 5 may see unexpected delays, according to reports Friday morning.

Just days leading up to the expected debut, Digitimes says panel-maker Winitek may have produced some iPhone 5 touch panels that contain a defect, potentially leading to some supply issues for the much-anticipated device.

Winitek has said it is delivering panels right on schedule.

The defect is called a "delayed bubble," and it's difficult to detect during production, especially when the problem isn't noticed during the process of laminating the panels. Winitek is expected to rapidly remedy the panel issues; the same panels are also used in the iPhone 4. Winitek accounts for about 20 to 25 percent of iPhone 5 panels, Digitimes reports.

Apple shares are down about 1 percent Friday.
