The new iPhone 4S from Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is facing some mixed reviews Wednesday.
The New York Times' David Pogue, as much comedic as tech genius, gave a positive review of the device, with focus on a specific feature. Pogue highlighted four major upgrades to the new iPhone 4S:
Pogue goes on to rant about how great Siri is. Telling it things like "Play some Beatles," "How do I get to the airport," and "Change my 7:35am alarm to 8," will get exactly those responses.
Other questions like "How many AT&T minutes do I have left this month," or "How do you get ketchup stains out," and you'll get an apology. Should you try to schedule something when you already have an event booked for a certain time will get you a mini conversation, which mostly entails you either overriding you're other appointment, or, possibly, trying to squeeze the new one in there.
No word on what happens if you ask it to "call in sick" for you. More research will be needed.
The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg also highlighted Siri as being the phone's standout feature. He agrees the tool is not perfect, or completely comprehensive, but it's labeled a 'beta' meaning there is still work left to be done on it.
Mossberg said the other big feature was the camera. It's an 8-megapixel, rear-facing camera, which isn't the first on a smartphone, but Mossberg likes the much-improved sensor and lens on the device. He thinks he's never taken videos on a smartphone camera which were this good. The video is 1080p.
The iPhone 4S also has capability to download at 4G speeds, Mossberg claims, even though it's on a 3G network. The drawback, if you want to look at it like that, is you can only do that on AT&T's (NYSE: T) network. Mossberg averaged about 7-megabits per second at three spots around Washington DC.
He doesn't think this is a "game-changer" like previous models. Folks with older models will be able to get some of the features on it through a free upgrade to iOS 5.
For people with a recent iPhone, Mossberg doesn't believe the iPhone 4S is a "must have." Those who don't have a smartphone, or a much older iPhone may want to consider upgrading.
Apple shares closed up 0.6 percent to $402.56 Wednesday afternoon.
