Apple (AAPL) iOS Apps Outpace Google (GOOG) in Revenue During Q3

October 15, 2014 9:30 AM EDT

While Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) app downloads at Google Play outpaced those of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) at iOS App Store in Q3, overall revenue paints a different picture.

AppAnnie said iOS App Store downloads generated about 60 percent more revenue versus those from rival Google Play.

One explanation is growth of Google Play apps in emerging and developing markets, according to the report. Users in those markets are less likely to spend money on paid-for apps.

Notably, Facebook's (Nasdaq: FB) Messenger app sale a pop in downloads from July, to August, and September. Facebook’s action is in line with the trend of unbundling apps, similar to what Foursquare did with Swarm, in order to provide users with a streamlined, focused and improved experience, the report noted.

Google and Apple are both lower in early trading.
