Apple (AAPL) iOS 7: A 'Childish' Redesign?

June 11, 2013 8:35 AM EDT
Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) ended Monday's session lower following the keynote speech at WWDC 2013, which saw a slew of new hardware and software. Most notably, the successor to iOS 6 was unveiled, with largely mixed reviews.

One of the more notable reviews comes from TheVerge. Author and editor-in-chief Joshua Topolsky tears into Apple iOS 7, going as far as to call some of the features "childish."

Here is a section from the review, to give you an idea of his initial thoughts:

Game Center is now a collection of 3D globs, rendered together against a white background, while the Camera icon recalls something more like clip-art — an icon that seems to want to be more abstract than it is, set against a rudimentary gray gradient. It looks shockingly basic, and not elegant, but childish. The same goes for Weather, an amateur mishmash of sun, clouds, and gradient background that was highlighted as part of Apple's new "grid system." It might be on a grid, but it doesn't look very good. The Maps icon is a mess, too many colors and lines intersecting at once. Messages' word balloon is so puffed up and oversized compared to its fine point that it looks like it will topple over.

But, its not all bad. Topolsky likes the new font and multitasking (Note: multitasking has been available on Android for while now). He hopes that engineers will clean up the OS a little more prior to launch, though the developer version is now available.

After closing 0.7 percent lower Monday, Apple is down again early Tuesday.
