Apple (AAPL) Unveils New Operating System & 13.7M iPhones Sold

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) unveils new operating system and announces product statistics.

800M downloads of new operating system
13.7 million iPhones sold in 2008 (Apple's Goal was 10M phones)
800k downloands of iPhone developer kit
30M units sold of Apple (AAPL) iPhones and iPod touch
60% of iPhone developers are new to Apple
iPhone Apps Store now has 25K Apps

New Apple iPhone 3.0 software will include:
  • Peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth for gaming and other info-swapping.
  • Paid apps will have the potential to be subscription fee-based, and can include optional paid content that can be bought from right inside the app.
  • Developers can now build apps that call out to Google Maps, and can also finally bring Apple turn-by-turn directions to the phone.
  • Apple's new OS will FINALLY offer what all users have desired: Cut, Copy and Paste
  • Apple says there will be 1,000 new APIs.
  • Long-promised push functionality will at last be included, but apps won't run in the background.
  • Developers can add streaming video and audio to their apps, along with in-game voice use.
