Apple (AAPL) Surges Past RIM (RIMM) in Smartphone War

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) beat Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM) in sales of smartphones during the third quarter to reach second place in the global market.
Apple is still far from passing leader Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK), but according to research from Strategy Analytics the iPhone maker could push tot he top in the near future.
The firm stated that, "RIM continues to be hampered by a limited presence in the high-growth touch screen segment and consequently its global smart phone market share has edged down from 20 percent to 16 percent during the past 12 months.”
