Curious about whether or not Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is going to get sued over use of the word Lightning as the name of the new super-fast data-transfer connector on its new devices?
Fear not, Apple secured the rights months ago. Apple entered a deal with motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson (NYSE: HOG) to use the word. Harley had an EU Certificate of Registration for "Lightning," which was originally held by H-D Michigan, Inc., an IP segment of the company.
PatentlyApple notes that Apple was granted a partial license on the name, letting Harley retain rights for naming motorcycle-related products. The trademark will remain protected until 2013.
Interestingly, Harleys original International Class trademarks also cover a broad range of non-motorcycle related items, like TVs, eyeglasses, and computer game programs. The broad definition might also be related to accessories Harley might offer.
Shares of Apple are up 1.2 percent, while Harley is down 0.7 percent Monday.
