Samsung didn't beat Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) in smartphone shipments last quarter...
Samsung absolutely annihilated the iPhone-maker.
According to quarterly reports from both Samsung and Apple, Samsung has ousted Apple atop the global smartphone shipment list. Samsung said handset revenue ripped to about $2.3 billion, making up about 60 percent of the company's total revenue stream.
Though Samsung didn't give out specific numbers for smartphone shipments, one research firm, Strategy Analytics, said Samsung shipped 27.8 million smartphones last quarter, giving it 23.8 percent market share. By comparison, Apple shipped 17.1 million units in the quarter, good for about 14.6 percent of the market.
Samsung also became the second most profitable handset maker behind Apple, with 16.9 percent net profit margin, compared with 30.8 percent for Apple.
Investors might be concerned that Samsung's rise might be halted, as the iPhone 4S wasn't launched until October and Apple shipments may have suffered as a result. Addressing these concerns, some analysts continue to believe Samsung will be able to sustain momentum through the fourth quarter. Samsung also issued a statement, saying, "Looking ahead to the fourth quarter...Samsung expects sales of mobile devices to remain strong."
Additionally, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) may look to add pressure. Though the company introduced two new Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows Phones a few days ago, the choice to eschew Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android is turning into a costly one for the Finnish mobile OEM. Net device profit for Nokia fell 25 percent to €5.392 billion last quarter, while smart devices saw a 39 percent drop in net profit to €2.206 billion. Margins severely compressed as well, moving from 10.5 percent to 4.1 percent, on a non-IFRS basis.
Earlier it was reported Nokia will be fiddling with a Linux-based mobile OS for it's lower-end smartphones in markets like China and India. Nokia is already the value-priced smartphone leader in China, according to some reports
