Reports in recent days have stated that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is working on a smaller version of the popular iPhone to bring a less costly version of the device to consumers to compete with the array of Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android Devices.
However, a report on Friday from The New York Times citing sources familiar with the situation, that Apple is not currently working on a shrunken version of the iPhone, but may be looking into a cheaper version of the current model.
The Times report stated, "Apple is not currently developing a smaller iPhone, according to people briefed on Apple's plans who requested anonymity because the plans are confidential."
The sources cited said that Apple does not see a smaller version as more cost efficient as it would be more difficult to operate.
A smaller iPhone would also cause Apple having to go to developers and ask them to rewrite apps for the device.
Earlier reports from Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal noted that Apple was working on an iPhone that was about one-third smaller than to half the size of the current iPhone 4.
