If there were any question that Apple is moving forward with a fingerprint scanner on an upcoming mobile device, those can all be put to rest.
Patently Apple pointed out today that Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) filed in Europe for patent protection of fingerprint scanning technology. The patent covers reducing "noise" in a fingerprint scan from a relatively large distance away from an array of finger-sensing pixels. Additionally, the technology would also be about to detect live tissue via RF-sensing electrodes, which would cut down on spoofing images.
The technology could be both implemented in laminated identification (ID) cards as well as under the housing of a device.
It wasn't speculated whether or not the technology will make it to the iPhone 5 or a later version of the device.
Shares of Apple are up in early trading.
