Apple (AAPL) May Bring iPhone to Second Chinese Carrier in Fall

June 24, 2011 2:07 PM EDT
According to the Shanghai Daily, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is currently in a deal to bring its iPhone to China Mobile Limited (NYSE: CHL) sometime in the fall.

China Mobile's Beijing-based marketing official Liu Yang reported the news on his own microblog.

Shanghai Daily believes that the device will use the 4G network, though that is pure speculation. Many carriers, including China Mobile, are still focused on solidifying their 3 and 3.5G networks.

Apple currently has a deal with China Unicom (NYSE: CHU) on the Chinese mainland.

The news could be as much a boon for China Mobile as for Apple. Currently, China Mobile customers have to switch numbers and cancel plans if they decide to use an iPhone from here on out.

But for Apple, the addition of Chine Mobile means more access to China's 910.1 million 3G users, as reported by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) today.

Apple is about a percent lower on the session.
