Apple (AAPL) Maps Irks Some Reviewers; Still Trails Google (GOOG)

If you're friends with an iPhone user, prepare for them to be late. To just about everything.
According to reports out Thursday, that's just what might happen with Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) new iPhone 5. Apple effectively replaced Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Maps with its own, internally developed setup.
Some reviewers have complained that Apple's mapping software doesn't provide directions for public transportation and it sometimes gets confused when navigating users (i.e. - it's primary objective).
Other things Apple has dropped from its iPhone as its rivalry with Google continues is the YouTube app, as well as Google's e-mail and document software. Critics are less abrasive on those moves, saying it doesn't make sense for Apple to source-out a key part of its ecosystem.
Just to be clear, not all reviewers observed flaws in Apple Maps. One reviewer from USA Today didn't have an issue and another from Mac World called it "stunning."
But, Google has had a jump on mapping technology. Many users have accessed Google Maps via a desktop device in the past, helping to improve the service over the years. Given that Apple's software is remarkably close, future upgrades and iterations should make it a more formidable competitor.
