Apple (AAPL) HealthKit Gets Integrated at Major Los Angeles-Area Hospital

April 27, 2015 12:39 PM EDT

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) got a big boost for its HealthKit last weekend after Los Angele's Cedars-Sinai Medical Center turned on access to the app for some 80,000 patients.

According to Bloomberg, Cedars-Sinai patients will be able to integrate personal medical info with patient files and give their doctors access to the information over the Internet. Doctors will then be able to monitor a patient's blood pressure, weight, glucose levels, oxygen saturation levels, and daily steps taken through the app.

Cedars-Sinai chief information officer, Darren Dworkin, commented, This is just another set of data that we’re confident our physicians will take into account as they make clinical and medical judgments ... We don’t really, fully know and understand how patients will want to use this and we’re going to basically stand ready to learn by what will happen.

While the initial opportunity might seem small, other hospitals might following in the footsteps of Cedars-Sinai as they also look to retain a competitive advantage.

Shares of Apple are up 2 percent.
