Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) wants to live up to the age-old saying: "two is better than one."

Digitimes reports today that Apple might be looking to release two new versions of its popular iPhone handset in the third-quarter of 2013. The company is said to have asked manufacturers to produce 20 million units per month, sources said.

The devices will be released in June at the earliest and include a revised version of the iPhone 5 and a new, low-cost model. The low-cost version will be comparable to specs on the iPhone 4S, but utilize a lower-quality display and processor.

Shipments are expected to start in June and ramp through July and August. Total iPhone volume could hit 100 million to 120 million units in the latter-part of 2013.

Apple rival Samsung is not going to take the news sitting down. The company is also allegedly producing a lower-cost version of its Galaxy S4 handset slated for release in the third quarter. The company is also expected to release a new version of its Galaxy Note in either July or August.

Apple is indicated for a lower open at the start Wednesday.
