Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has confirmed that it will hold a special media event next week on March 2, presumably to show off its second-generation iPad tablet computer.
The event will be held in the usual Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The image sent with the invitation shows the usual Apple calendar app icon peeled back to reveal the corner of an iPad, with the tag line, "Come see what 2011 will be the year of."
The iPad 2 is expected to have multiple improvements as the company that defined the tablet market looks to improve on the 15 million units sold of the first model in 2010.
It was not stated if Steve Jobs will be at the event next week, as the Apple CEO is still on medical leave to focus on his health.
Shares of Apple are up $2.09 to $340.70 in midday market movement on a day when most of the market is pulling back.
