Apple (AAPL) CEO Cook: 'What Kindle Fire?' (AMZN)

January 25, 2012 10:20 AM EST
Following first-quarter results from Apple which absolutely demolished analyst estimates, some might be wondering if Amazon's (Nasdaq: AMZN) Kindle Fire had any impact on iPad sales.

CEO Tim Cook had a simple answer: "None."

Also not impacting results were tablets from Samsung, HTC, Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MMI), Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM), and so on, ad infinitum.

Following the release Tuesday, Cook said he looked closely at iPad sales and determined Amazon's (Nasdaq: AMZN) Fire didn't affect the sale of Apple's iPad. Not only that, but Cook poured over weekly numbers since the introduction of the Fire just to see how sales were faring, and still saw no impact.

This is an absolutely telling sign for the iPad and a shot to competitors' hearts. Analysts could possibly revamp tablet sales numbers upward for Apple now, considering the $499 entry price point doesn't seem to be a significant barrier. Further, when Apple does an iPad refresh, it's expected the current model will have about $100 lopped off its price to start at $399.

Shares of Apple are up about 6.5 percent early Wednesday.
