Apple (AAPL) Bests Rivals, Gobbles Most Chips in 2010 - IHS

June 8, 2011 9:48 AM EDT
Apple, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL), has finally done it.

In 2010, the Cupertino, CA-based tech giant became the number one buyer of semiconductors among original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for the first time ever, according to data from IHS (NYSE: IHS) today.

This marks the first time that Apple has achieved the designation, besting rivals like Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), Dell (Nasdaq: DELL0, Nokia (NYSE: NOK), Sony (NYSE: SNE), and others.

Apple bought $17.5 billion worth of semis in the year, a 79.6 percent jump from $9.7 billion purchased in 2009. The number boosted Apple two spots to number one.

Further, Apple's spending is expected to exceed rival Hewlett-Packard by $7.5 billion in 2011, compared to just a $2.4 billion gap in 2010.

Apple held the sixth position in semi spending as recently as 2008.

Hewlett-Packard and Apple, however, are different. While Hewlett-Packard's spending went 82 percent into computer semis, Apple dedicated 61 percent to chips for wireless devices, like smartphones and tablet PCs. The difference boosted Apple shares in 2010, as smartphone shipments grew 62 percent in 2010, while tablet PCs saw a staggering 900 percent increase.

Apple is trading flat early, while Hewlett-Packard is slightly lower.
