More good news heading into Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) quarterly report Tuesday.

According to research firm Gartner, Apple moved into the top-spot in terms of overall orders for semiconductor chips in 2011, beating out competition from Samsung, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), Dell (Nasdaq: DELL), Nokia (NYSE: NOK), and several others.

Gartner used a metric known as design total available market (TAM), which the firm describes as "the total silicon content in all products designed by a certain electronic equipment manufacturer or in a certain region, while purchasing TAM represents the total silicon content purchased directly by a certain electronic equipment manufacturer or in a certain region."

Growth was impressive for Apple: design TAM rose 34.6 percent from $12.819 billion in 2010 to $17.257 billion in 2011. The company's overall market share was 5.7 percent.

Samsung, number 1 in 2010, saw its demand grow 9.2 percent to $16.681 billion for market share of 5.5 percent. H-P realized 5.5 percent of consolidation to $16.618 billion, Dell shrank 6.7 percent to $9.792 billion, and Nokia dropped 20.1 percent to $9.042 billion.

With major growth drivers in 2011 split amongst mobile phones, tablets, and solid-state drives, its no surprise Apple came in at the top.

Gartner noted Sony Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks were treated as stand-alone firms in the report.

Ahead of the numbers after Tuesday's closing bell, Apple shares are down 0.8 percent.
