Apple (AAPL) Adds Lower-Cost iPod Touch to Lineup

Ahead of an expected product refresh, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is expanding its product lineup ever so slightly.

TheVerge noted today that Apple is now offering a 16-gigabyte (GB) version of its fifth-generation iPod touch. The device, which retails for $229, has no rear-facing camera, but is equipped with a 4-inch Retina display, dual-core A5 processor, and front-facing HD camera. It also comes in only black and silver.

Prior to today's launch, Apple only offered the latest iPod line in 32- and 64-GB variations.

It's not clear whether are large refresh will be made for the iPod or whether the newest addition will be available in more color choices.

Shares of Apple are up 0.4 percent in early trading Thursday.
