Apple's (AAPL) iPod Going the Way of the Dodo

As the iPod approaches it's tenth birthday, one can't help wonder... why is Apple so silent?

Normally, Apple hosts an event in September debuting the newest additions and features to the device that arguably changed the music industry. The closest thing Apple is planning is an October 4th event for the (alleged) unveiling of its newest iPhone.

Is Apple slowly killing the iPod?

To be honest, we here at Streetinsider can't remember the last time a news headline came out about the iPod (it may have been the redesign with a new, mini screen embedded in the body last year).

While the iPod is a solid device, functions smoothly, looks great, and has a strong following, the iPhone also plays music, multitasks, plays media and more. You can also talk on an iPhone -- something the iPod obviously lacks.

The one immediate plus side to the iPod is portability with the Nano and Shuffle. Those who don't want to carry around a bulkier device will always turn to those items, but growth in that market may have peaked.

Sales of iPods declined over the last year: Apple's last quarter showed unit sales down 12.5 percent, with iPod revenue falling 6.2 percent.

Shares of Apple are down 3.2 percent as U.S. markets continue to burn Thursday.
