JetBlue Airways (Nasdaq: JBLU) is out with the best press release of the day.
Earlier, JetBlue announced receiving "Federal Aviation Administration approval to give all pilots custom-equipped Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPads."
Reasoning is this: the iPads "will add more real-time capabilities in the cockpit and save fuel by eliminating the heavy paper manuals that all pilots carry."
How big of a fuel savings is JetBlue expecting by eliminating a few pounds of paper?
Anyway, JetBlue might be one of the first major airlines to get iPads in the cockpit for pilots. The move is clearly a plus for Apple and a negative for Garmin (Nasdaq: GRMN), which still dominates the aerospace GPS scene.
More from the release: "Following a successful trial phase with approximately 60 pilots over several months, JetBlue already has begun giving all 2,500 pilots a fourth-generation 16 GB Wi-Fi capable Apple iPad. While JetBlue has been approved for a decade to use a PC-based laptop in the cockpit – called an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) – the iPads will offer new capabilities and conveniences, especially as JetBlue implements Ka-Band satellite Wi-Fi."
Garmin, Apple, and JetBlue are all trading lower on the session.
